History
In the late 1970s, Singapore began developing a new web equipment system to replace its earlier cotton-based sets with more modern materials. This system was designed not only to carry the standard water bottle but also to accommodate a Mills-type water filter bank and water sterilization tablets, reflecting the growing emphasis on field hygiene and modular utility.
For this, the designers chose to retain the proven British Pattern-1944 water bottle carrier design, but produced it locally in a durable deep bronze green nylon duck fabric. Throughout its service life, the carrier underwent only one notable modification — the addition of a front nylon loop to improve stability when used with the later EFOD skeleton webbing system introduced in the late 1980s.
Although officially issued to Singaporean troops, the carrier also found its way into the hands of New Zealand soldiers stationed in Singapore. Many used it as an unofficial canteen cover, often customizing or modifying it for personal use. Even after the New Zealand Army’s withdrawal from Singapore in 1989, the carrier continued to see use among those who had retained them.
Description
The carrier is made from deep bronze green nylon duck fabric. It closes with Lift-the-Dot (LTD) fasteners on each side, securing the water bottle firmly in place. The cover is intentionally oversized to fit not only the aluminum canteen and cup but also the sterilization and filtration components commonly stored with them.
Attachment to the web belt is via a pair of British-style double hooks (“C-hooks”) at the rear, with a 1-inch-wide nylon web loop positioned between them. Inside is a small internal compartment with a simple fold-over flap designed to hold a Mills-type water filter bank. Beside it runs a narrow nylon loop intended for a tube or packet of water-purification tablets.
The front of the carrier is reinforced with strips of nylon webbing on the underside of the retaining straps that secure the canteen, and at the point where the lip of the canteen cup rests. The base is fitted with a small drainage eyelet for water egress and strengthened with a second layer of nylon duck fabric.
